Gaza [Palestine], July 8: AFP quoted the Palestinian Red Crescent as saying on July 7 that the bodies of six people killed in the Israeli raid had been taken to Al Aqsa Hospital in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah. A day earlier, Gaza health authorities said at least 16 people were killed and 50 injured in an Israeli airstrike on a school run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in the Nuseirat area in central Gaza, where many refugees are sheltering. The Israeli military said its planes had targeted "terrorists" operating around the Al-Jawni school. In addition, Israel affirmed that it had taken precautions to minimize the risk to civilians, before targeting the gunmen who were taking advantage of the place to hide and attack Israeli soldiers. According to Al Jazeera, Hamas denied that its members were present at the school, and accused Israel of "concealing its clear goal of seeking to destroy our people".
Regarding peace efforts, Haaretz newspaper quoted a source as saying that Israel has just made new demands that could prolong the negotiation process. "Hamas has approved the latest request made by Israel. But in the dialogue on July 5, Israel raised new issues," the source revealed, adding that the Israeli side has taken a tough stance in the dialogue. Some Israeli sources estimate that the dialogue could last about 3 weeks. Meanwhile, opposition leader Yair Lapid called on the Israeli government to agree to a long-term ceasefire agreement because the country is "not suitable for long-term wars".
